The airport of Budapest is about 16 km (9.9 mi) south-east of the center of Budapest.

The idea to build an airport was born in 1938. Aviation started in 1943 but in wartime, the civil construction slowed down and then stopped at the biginning of 1944. Many of the buildings got damaged. By the end of 1944, Budapest and the airport were under Soviet occupation. In 1947, the airport got reconstructed for civil aviation.
